The Little Station That Could-and Did

They said radio station WPFW couldn't work because it wanted to
play jazz and Third World music, have talk shows in Spanish and
readings of black American poetry, and devote air time to blues and
news from the Caribbean.
And it sure wasn't suppose to work with shows called "The 'Bama
Hour" and "Corn Between Your Teeth."
But it did.
After 10 years on the air at 89.3 FM, WPFW has worked its way to
national acclaim as the largest listener-supported, minority-run
public radio station in the country. And as station fans celebrate
