Ousted Chinese Leader Criticized by Officials;Hu Yaobang Called `Weak and Ineffective'

Two leading Chinese officials publicly criticized ousted
Communist Party chief Hu Yaobang today as "weak and ineffective."
In a press conference, Vice Premiers Yao Yilin and Li Peng blamed
Hu for allowing student prodemocracy demonstrations to spread last
December and for failing to combat a trend toward "bourgeois
liberalization," a term used to describe western democratic ideas.
Hu resigned as party chief on Jan. 16, but until now the Chinese
government has said little in public to explain his ouster.
A confidential party document issued in January said that Hu had
