The government of Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski announced stiff price
increases tonight for food, gasoline and other staple goods despite
strong opposition from Poland's official trade unions.
The increases, reported on state television, include 10 percent
for meat, more than 15 percent for bread and milk, 20 percent for
cigarettes and alcohol and 25 percent for gasoline and butter. A
government statement said overall food-price increases averaged 9.6
percent.
