These are, to put it mildly, awkward days for Alice Emerson. The
president of Wheaton College, a 153-year-old women's college just
south of Boston, has spent 12 years as an articulate defender of
single-sex institutions.
Even now, she can state with conviction the value of a female
learning environment. Nevertheless, in a matter of weeks, Wheaton
College is almost certain to begin the move toward coeducation. And
with her blessing.
"I think it's sad," Emerson admits. "There is so much women's
colleges could contribute, but we are not immune to what's going on."
