France mourns as mime artist Marcel Marceau bows out aged 84

THE grand silence out of which Marcel Marceau conjured lion-
tamers, peevish waiters and even an old woman knitting has now
finally enveloped the world's most successful mime artist. Mr
Marceau, whose famous act "Walking against the wind" went on to
inspire Michael Jackson's moonwalk, has died in Paris. He was 84.
A French Jew who survived the Holocaust in which his father was
murdered, Marceau used the old-fashioned art of mime to create moving
characters who eloquently expressed his world view that we are "alone
in a fragile world filled with injustice and beauty".
