Festival Review: Monteverdi's L'Orfeo: Magical rebirth for Monteverdi's Orpheus

OPERA MONTEVERDI'S L'ORFEO, EDINBURGH FESTIVAL THEATRE ****
THEY call it the first great opera. That's never so easy to judge
with 21st-century eyes and ears other than, inevitably, through
historical retrospective. Monteverdi's L'Orfeo is undoubtedly a
stylised work, based on a classical pastoral concept which the
audience at its Mantua premiere in 1607 would have felt essentially
comfortable with - though one has to assume that they were blown
sideways by Monteverdi's cataclysmic musical originality.
