THERE is a field which George Douglas, the 2nd Earl Haig, holds
dear. It lies half a mile from Bemersyde House, the grand family home
of warm honey-coloured stone which nestles within the green folds of
the Borders countryside. Sitting in the ground floor study, a yappy
