ISMAIL KADARE'S FICTIONALISED memoir of his childhood is a brisk read. The setting is Kadare's home city, Gjirokaster, in the south of Albania, near the Greek border, the time 1939-43. The narrator is a boy, lively, imaginative, intelligent and short-sighted. He is not to be identified too closely with Kadare himself, even if one assumes that the author's own memories of the war years - when Albania was invaded by Italians, Greeks and Germans, and a variety of collaborators and resistance groups fought what was in effect a ...
