Mallya hints that W&M deal may be in the offing

VIJAY Mallya, pictured below, the controlling shareholder in
India's biggest brewer, United Breweries, suggested yesterday that he
was nearing a deal to take over the Glasgow-based Scotch whisky
producer, Whyte & Mackay.
Speaking in Shanghai, where UB unit United Spirits was introducing
five of its liquor brands for the first time in the fast-growing
China market, Mallya told reporters that UB Group will make a
decision on a possible acquisition of W&M in two weeks.
Mallya and officials at W&M have been in talks for months over the
