Political patronage on way out as MPs vote for fully elected House of Lords

A FULLY elected House of Lords was backed by MPs last night in a dramatic vote that overturned constitutional deadlock dating back nearly a century.

MPs voted by 337 to 224 in favour of ending all appointments to the House of Lords. They also supported a move to remove the remaining hereditary peers.

The move will put pressure on Gordon Brown to promise an all- elected House of Lords in Labour's next manifesto if, as expected, he takes over as prime minister.

Tony Blair had refused to disclose which option he would back ahead of the vote, but he ended up supporting a proposal for the Lords ...
