Women as well as men may take part in the Holy Thursday rite of the washing of feet in Roman Catholic churches during Holy Week, the American Catholic Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy has decreed.

The exclusion of women from the Holy Week ritual last year by Pittsburgh Bishop Anthony Bevilacqua triggered a bitter controversy in the diocese and became a cause celebre among feminists throughout the church.

Bevilacqua asked for clarification from the Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy. The committee responded in a memo sent late last month to all bishops in the church.
