THAT'S it, then. Settled. Sorted. All over. Sir Max Hastings has
spoken, or more precisely written, or, let's be honest, decreed: "Let
the Scots eat porridge. We'll keep our English cake."
Noticing what Sir Max writes is not something I normally do when
he is in his instant-pundit, "What are your qualifications? I know
everything" role.
It's different when this man with the lean, lank hair, down-the-
nose look of an archetypal Tory, but who insists he isn't, writes a
book. His descriptions of life as a war correspondent and as editor
of the Daily Telegraph ring true.
