As recently as 40 years ago, this remote and mountainous corner of northern India was, for all practical purposes, cut off from the outside world.

Old-timers remember the occasional missionary or colonial official coming over a single-track road from Silchar and they recall Japanese and British foot patrols during World War II. But the Mizo peoples essentially lived much as they had for hundreds of years.

Their conversion to Christianity and the development of the first written form of their language by missionaries at the turn of the century had done little to change traditional patterns ...
