Judges overturn GBP 2.3m embezzlement verdict

A WEALTHY businessman yesterday won an appeal against his conviction and five-year jail sentence for a GBP 2.3 million embezzlement.

Iain Cowper, 59, had suffered a miscarriage of justice when the judge misdirected the jury at his trial in 2002, the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh ruled.

As well as wiping out the jury's guilty verdict and the jail term - of which Cowper had served less than 24 hours before being freed pending appeal - the court quashed what had been Scotland's largest confiscation order, for GBP 1,080,622.
