Go back to the future to tackle absentee crofters, MSPs urged

A RADICAL plan that would do away with absentee crofters and
multiple ownership of crofts will be put to MSPs today.
Professor Jim Hunter wants the term "crofter" redefined to mean
someone whose main home is on a single croft. The effect would be to
free up thousands of crofts for people excluded from crofting while
land lies unused.
Prof Hunter, a former chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise
and a founder of the old Scottish Crofters' Union, will put his plan
to the Scottish Parliament's environment and rural development
committee when it discusses the Crofting Reform Bill.
