GSA to Give Elevators A Face Lift;$45 Million Sought To Fix Old Hoists

The No. 1 complaint involving federal buildings is about their elevators.

Many government elevators, especially in this area, are so old that some cannot be repaired. One of them, a 50-year-old lift at the north entrance to the Internal Revenue Service building, has been cannibalized to keep its three companions running.

Administrator Terence C. Golden jokingly cites two choices facing the GSA: "Replace these elevators, or put them out of service and make climbing stairs part of our physical fitness program."
