Transkei Frees Journalist Held for 2 Days; AFP Reporter Tried to Cover Coup Attempt in Neighboring Ciskei

A South African correspondent for the French news agency Agence France-Presse was released today after being held in jail for two days in the ostensibly independent tribal homeland of Transkei after trying to report on the attempted overthrow of the neighboring homeland of Ciskei, South African authorities said.

Graham Brown, 39, a South African national who is married to an American Embassy employe, was detained Saturday by Transkei security police and taken to a jail in Umtata, the capital.
