THERE are stories that imitate the surface of reality, in all its ordinariness and complexity. And then there are stories of a different order, stories that adopt a style, a tone, a vision so extreme, and so complete in itself, that they delve beneath the surface, into some deeper truth that unleashes a huge burst of energy and recognition, even in people who have never lived lives anything like those of the characters.
