Rice's visit to mosque abandoned after threats by anti-war protesters

A PLANNED visit by Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, to
a mosque in Blackburn, Lancashire, was cancelled yesterday after
threats by anti-war protesters.
The event was intended to be a gesture of reconciliation towards
the Muslim community, to heal the deep rifts caused by the Iraq war.
But the mosque's governing committee called off the visit after
Muslim protesters threatened to "invade" the mosque ahead of Ms
Rice's visit, scheduled for today.
Ms Rice is visiting Blackburn and Liverpool to repay a visit Jack
Straw, the Foreign Secretary, made to her home town of Birmingham, ...
