Public sector spending accounts for 51 per cent of the economy

THE public sector officially accounts for more than half the
Scottish economy, new figures prepared for MSPs have revealed.
Holyrood researchers found that public expenditure in Scotland
represents 51 per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) -
the first time with these calculations that the figure has risen to
more than half the total for the Scottish economy.
In Scotland in 2003-4, the latest period for which figures are
available, GBP 45.3 billion out of the total GBP 89 billion of
