KANO, THE VENUE, EDINBURGH ***
UK RAP has always been seen as the poor cousin of its glitzier US
counterpart, largely because of its failure to produce a crossover
superstar, rather than any creative inferiority. The chart-topping So
Solid Crew mishandled their 15 minutes of infamy, confusing the
fantasy and the reality of the gangsta rap lifestyle and swiftly
imploding, leaving the resolutely non-gangsta sports casual poet Mike
Skinner, aka The Streets, as Britrap's principal ambassador. And he's
no superstar - just the geezer down the road.
