The Rev. Alvin C. Shackleford outlasted stiff conservative opposition this week and narrowly won election as director of Baptist Press, the news agency of the Southern Baptist Convention.

In accepting, he asked for a year's grace to prove to the divided Executive Committee that elected him that he could promote healing in the convention, which has been rocked by controversy since 1979.
