Bid to separate national and council elections has both practical and political motivation

A CONSERVATIVE MSP has launched a fresh attempt to postpone Scotland's council elections.

Brian Monteith has lodged a bill that would decouple the local government elections from the Scottish Parliament elections, both of which are due to take place in May 2007.

If Monteith's plan succeeds, the council elections would be postponed, possibly by as much as a year, allowing the Scottish Parliament elections to take place as planned in 2007, with the council elections some time later - possibly in 2008.

Monteith has the support of both COSLA and Unison for his move - normally unlikely allies ...
