Marconi tipped to merge with Ericsson

MARCONI is understood to be putting the final touches to a merger with the Swedish giant Ericsson - ending months of speculation that it is seeking to give up its independence.

The telecoms group said in August that it was in "discussions with third parties about potential business combinations", and Ericsson is thought to have emerged with the highest bid. The deal would value Marconi at GBP 1.3 billion - twice its current market value.
