Chris Llewellyn finds her poetry in facts, headlines, the records of past disasters-what she calls "real things."

"My work doesn't involve much fantasy-just memories, mine and others, the collective memory," says the Washington writer who for years immersed herself in the facts of the 1911 fire at New York's Triangle Shirtwaist Co. One hundred forty-six immigrant workers were killed, most of them women, some as young as 14. Trapped by locked doors, which survivors believed had been sealed to keep labor organizers out, they jumped from the ninth floor to die on the sidewalk below.
