1 Apart from solving a juicy homicide, two of Miss Jane Marple's favourite hobbies are bird-watching and gardening. Early in her career, she used bird-watching as an excuse to spy on inhabitants of St Mary Mead.

2 When she first appeared in 1928, Miss Marple's age was given as 74. In At Bertram's Hotel in 1965 she is described as looking a hundred and throughout the book her old age is emphasised. In Nemesis, in 1971, she is approximately 110 years old and still active.

3 Miss Marple's home of St Mary Mead was an amalgam of several places that Agatha Christie knew. The fictional town is 25 ...
