Fossil find solves ancient fish mystery

FOSSIL hunters have helped to solve the mystery of what the first freshwater fish fed on after recovering a 410 million-year-old relic in Aberdeenshire.

Experts at the National Museum of Scotland (NMS) have found what they say are "exquisitely preserved fossil animals of global importance" in the world-renowned Rhynie Chert deposits near the village of Rhynie, Aberdeenshire.

The new fossil, resembling daphnia, modern-day water fleas, is a small freshwater crustacean which swims upright by pulsating its feathery antennae. It comes from the geological time period when fish first began to ...
