SELLING grain used to be a local business, at least as far as farmers were concerned. They bought seed, fertiliser and sprays from a local merchant and grew a crop, then relied on the same merchant, and one or two of his competitors to make it interesting, to bid for the grain at harvest time.

For some farmers, haggling over that harvest price, preferably face-to-face with the merchant when both had time to spare to do that, and squeezing out a few shillings more per ton for a good quality sample was half the fun. What dictated price was quality, yield and a good or bad British summer. ...
