THE Roman Catholic Church holds the allegiance of 1.1 billion people - one in every six human beings. The new Pope, Benedict XVI, therefore cannot fail to play a leading role in global affairs. The more so since his predecessor, John Paul II, transformed the role of the papacy from being the office of an important church bureaucrat into that of an international religious superstar.

But has the College of Cardinals - mostly chosen by the late John Paul himself - selected the right man?
