Great Scottish Scientists: Number 2: Alexander Fleming Ayrshire son of the soil who broke the mould to discover penicillin

IN SEPTEMBER 1928, Alexander Fleming took a decision that was to
turn him into one of the most famous scientists in the world - he
went on holiday.
Returning to the lab, Fleming noticed that a discarded sample of
the germ staphylococcus had been contaminated with mould that he
assumed had simply floated in through the window.
Many scientists would have simply thrown the plate away, but this
son of an Ayrshire farmer looked more closely and saw the germ was
absent from the area around the mould, which was called Penicillium
notatum.
