Arts Council was warned of opera crisis in January 2001

THE Scottish Arts Council was warned in January 2001 of the looming financial crisis that would bring Scottish Opera to its knees, it emerged yesterday.

A report commissioned by the council itself said that the opera company was on course to run up GBP 3.6 million in debt in three years.

Its author, Sir Peter Jonas, warned both the arts council and the Scottish Executive to face up to the opera's "in-built" financial problems and boost its annual grant from GBP 7.5 million to GBP 8.5 million.
