EVERY REGULAR REVIEWER should recognise that he often gets it wrong. Sometimes he misses the point of a book altogether. Sometimes, as if in compensation, he lavishes excessive praise on a novel which, a year later, he finds he can't remember at all.

This caveat seems peculiarly necessary this week. The Piano Teacher is the work of the Austrian novelist and playwright Elfriede Jelinek, who has just been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. This makes her one of literature's Good and Great, up there with, among others, ...
