Md. Labor Leaders Bow on Benefits;Deal Struck with Schaefer on Workers' Compensation Reductions

Labor leaders who ardently opposed measures to alter workers' compensation laws in Maryland apparently bowed to pressure from Gov. William Donald Schaefer and agreed Monday to compromise legislation that would cut benefits to workers with less serious injuries.

The compromise, on one of the governor's key legislative issues, virtually ensures that the traditionally prolabor legislature will approve some cuts in disability benefits, but less drastic reductions than Schaefer originally proposed.

"We're not satisfied completely with this bill," Ed Lamon, president of the Maryland-D.C. ...
