Borders group backs smoking ban as more women die from lung cancer

THE leader of a project that aims to cut death rates from heart disease, cancer and strokes in the Scottish Borders says a worrying increase in the number of women dying from lung cancer reinforces the case for a ban on smoking in public.

According to new figures, there was a 29 per cent rise in the number of lung cancer deaths among the female population of the Borders between 1990 and 2002, well above the national average.
