IN THE early 1960s, Miriam Makeba became the first world music
superstar. Her accessible mix of her native South African folk and
gospel songs blended with jazz, soul and western pop styles was
usually accompanied by her candid condemnation of apartheid, a view
which effectively exiled her from South Africa for over 30 years and
led to her petitioning the UN on a couple of occasions.
Now 72 and threatening retirement next year, the diva dubbed "Mama
Africa" is still a woman of irrepressible, invincible spirit and a
fabulous stage presence, ...
