Scots youngster snaps up the top prize

A PICTURE of the Aurora Borealis taken by an aspiring young Scottish photographer has won the young person's category in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition.

Fergus Gill, of Wolfhill, Perthshire, took the picture last November when unusual solar flares, called coronal mass ejections, caused stunning moving colours to occur over Scotland with much greater intensity than normal.

The overall prize in the annual competition was won by a Hawaiian photographer for an image of two sharks swimming around a "baitball" of sardines, which the judges described as: "A spectacle of light and ...
