Tesco tops City hopes as profits surge 24 per cent

TESCO, Britain's leading supermarket group - which also has a
market-leading 25 per cent of the Scottish food retailing market -
unveiled a barnstorming interim trading performance yesterday with a
profits leap of 24 per cent.
City analysts said the performance was particularly eye-catching
because it was up against strong comparative figures in the same
period of 2003.
Tesco, which has 84 stores in Scotland, revealed that underlying
pre-tax profits, stripping out one-off items, rose to GBP 822 million
(GBP 661m) on group sales of GBP 16.5 billion. Shareholders benefit
