In the footsteps of forgotten pioneer

MORE than 150 years ago, Sir John Ross set off from his home on
the shores of Loch Ryan, near Stranraer, and headed into the great
unknown in search of that fabled holy grail which so gripped
Victorian adventurers - the North West Passage.
He didn't find it, but it was to prove a successful trip - it
included the discovery of the magnetic North Pole - and his
achievements were on a par with the great polar pioneer Sir Ernest
Shackleton. However, he has remained an unsung hero.
But now, Lieutenant Mark Hankey, a direct descendant of the
