AT LADBROKES, Franz Ferdinand are 9-4 favourites to win the
Mercury Music Prize tonight. Which means that, if the Mercury sticks
to habit, they probably won't. The Mercury is supposed to be the
connoisseur's prize, the pop Booker, an endorsement of musical
quality uncorrupted by fashion, hype, money or populism. If they give
the award to Franz Ferdinand, they'll be giving it to a band who are
now so fashionable that the ground beneath their feet starts to look
like a catwalk. Designers give them free clothes, dull celebrities
pretend to be fans to make themselves sound more interesting, and ...
