I PICTURE HIM, AT HIS DESK IN THE musky light of early evening in southern Israel, gazing out across his garden taking in the surrounding wall, the single lemon tree, the roses, the patch of grass, a stretch of sky. Dressed in a vest (colour unknown) with casual shorts, in the pleasant warmth of a lingering summer's August day, he is on the telephone. Quietly listening. Softly answering. Muted, precise.

Does it matter how Amos Oz looks, or whether or not he has combed his hair (extremely doubtful), and should it matter what he wears or whether or not the lemons have ripened? For in picturing ...
