They laughed when AFL-CIO President Lane Kirkland said he'd like to have Republicans as well as Democrats seek the endorsement of the labor federation in the 1988 presidential primaries. Laugh no more.

Labor Secretary William E. Brock, a former national GOP chairman, told prospective candidates in his party that they'd be crazy not to go after organized labor's endorsement. "You bet your life it's worthwhile," he said. "Labor has the best voter-delivery mechanism in American politics outside of the two parties, and, occasionally, including the two parties."
