A SENIOR academic last night called for the length of degree courses in Scotland to be cut, in an attempt to reduce student debt and make better use of university buildings.

Ray Donnelly, a retired management lecturer, said ordinary three- year courses could be reduced to 18 months and the four-year Honours degree trimmed to two and a half years. This could be achieved by lengthening the traditional university day and cutting the length of holidays taken by students and lecturers.
