I CAN'T SAY that the celebrations have been impressive. No arcs of
champagne, streamers or brass bands, and not a single street party.
Then again, who would want to celebrate the somewhat esoteric fact
that 2004 is the official centenary of the IQ test?
A boon and a blessing to mankind? I fear not. But the consequences
of Frenchman Alfred Binet's experimental method of selecting officer
material for the army have been enormous. Within a year, a modified
version of Binet's test was introduced into French schools to
pinpoint children with learning difficulties. Apres ca, le deluge.
