About 10 years ago, in the architecture section of a used-book store, I picked from the shelf a book whose title, "Sinan," gave me no clue as to what or who it was about. The depth of my ignorance became apparent even as I paged through the book: Sinan, royal architect of the Ottoman Empire at the height of its power, was one of the great architects and builders of all time, comparable in ability, say, to his contemporaries Michelangelo and Palladio, and far more prolific.
