Edinburgh academic awarded 'Nobel prize' for maths

A FORMER Edinburgh University academic yesterday received the
maths world's equivalent of the Nobel prize.
Sir Michael Atiyah, 75, shared the GBP 480,000 Abel prize for
mathematics with his long-time collaborator, Professor Isadore
Singer, 79, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the
United States.
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters honoured the pair for
discovering and proving the Atiyah-Singer theorem 40 years ago. The
award was presented by King Harald of Norway at a ceremony in Oslo.
The academy's citation stated the academics had played an
