Scot wins maths 'Nobel' prize

A FORMER Edinburgh University academic, regarded as one of the finest mathematicians of the 20th century, has shared a Norwegian award equivalent to a Nobel prize.

Sir Michael Atiyah, 75, will jointly receive the GBP 480,000 Abel prize for mathematics with his long-time collaborator, Professor Isadore Singer, 79, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the United States.

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters yesterday honoured the pair for discovering and proving the Atiyah-Singer theorem 40 years ago.
