Call for extra blood donors after vCJD ban

MEMBERS of the public who are eligible to give blood were urged to come forward yesterday by the health minister, Malcolm Chisholm, after it was announced that all potential donors who have had blood transfusions would be turned away.

About 6,000 Scots who have had transfusions and give blood each year will be barred from donating, amid fears that they could transmit the brain disorder variant CJD.

Mr Chisholm told the Scottish Parliament yesterday that arrangements were in hand to introduce a screening test that will allow an estimated 2,500 donors, currently prevented from giving blood ...
