Scottish Water denies 7 per cent rise in bills

SCOTTISH Water last night admitted to The Scotsman that customers' bills will rise by as much as 3 per cent next year.

The quango denied suggestions by the Water Industry Commissioner, Alan Sutherland, that bills could rise by as much as 7 per cent by 2005-6.

But a spokesman said that, even if it kept inefficiencies to a minimum, bills could rise by between 2 and 3 per cent.

Scottish Water also insisted it would meet targets to reduce debts that the organisation inherited when it was set up in 2002.
