Sir Arnold's profits roar to GBP 44m

ARNOLD Clark, Scotland's biggest private company, out-performed the UK car sales market yet again last year as annual profits nearly doubled to a record GBP 44 million.

The firm, still run by the 76-year-old founder of the business, sold more than 150,000 new and second hand cars during 2003, a 9 per cent increase on the previous year, The Scotsman can exclusively reveal.

That compared with a 4 per cent rise in the number of cars sold UK- wide, which recent figures show topped ten million as buyers splashed out on the back of low interest rates.
