Sir David accused of misleading parliament on Holyrood building

SIR David Steel, the former presiding officer, was accused yesterday of misleading the Scottish Parliament before a crucial vote on the future of the Holyrood building project.

Fergus Ewing, the SNP MSP and a critic of the Holyrood project, claimed that an assertion by Sir David in April 2000 that scrapping the project would lead to compensation claims from firms from the west of Scotland was untrue.

Sir David, who stood down from parliament at the May election, made his comments in a debate on whether or not the project should be put on hold.
